When I was five years old I became obsessed with the Quarterflash song “Harden My Heart.” I would sing it everyday with no regard to who was around or listening. My family started using this fact as a party trick for all of their friends and family. Once I started realizing people were listening I became self-conscious and was embarrassed to sing, no matter how much praise and coaxing. That is until; they offered me a dollar for every time I would sing… The rest you can say is history.

I remember being a sophomore in high school and I had a really high and squeaky speaking voice. I had sung in elementary and middle schools, but we had just moved from Texas to Missouri and no one really knew I could sing at my new school. It was our chorus' Christmas Concert and I got chosen to sing "This Little Light of Mine" in a gospel arrangement. I stood on stage and sang out into the packed auditorium, feeling safe in the blinding spotlight because I couldn't see anyone :)! Afterwards I was known as the girl with the huge singing voice, who still squeaked when she talked.

To say that I was obsessed with Madonna as a youngster is an understatement. She was my reason for being. I decided that we were destined to be best friends, even though I was a mere 12-yr old living in obscurity in upstate NY, while she was the most famous woman of the day and lived in Hollywood...all technicalities, in my view. I decided (quite logically) that the quickest and easiest way to meet Madonna and get the epic friendship started would be to become a famous pop singer. I had grown up on a dance stage, but singing was a brand new undertaking. I had a strong belief in the brilliance of my plan though, and would not be detered. Sharing the plan with my ever-supportive mom, I was immediately introduced to a local voice teacher to get the pop-singer career started. As I recall, this voice teacher was less than impressed with my horrific rendition of "Dress You Up". She suggested that I might want to review my repertoire
choices, and I left her house that day with homework - to learn "Edelweiss" from Sound of Music. It wasn't so bad. Cut to a month later, I was standing in front of a room for the first time, singing "Edelweiss" in front of a room full of parents and friends. Terrifying? Yes. The way I want to spend every single day for the
rest of my life? Yes.
Thanks, Madonna!
